When working with a pool professional, you may hear the words "20 mil" or "27 mil" which are measurements of liner thickness, the latter being thicker. When you're choosing a liner, a lot of people believe the thicker the better; however, the thicker liners are still subject to the same ultraviolet, chemical, and heat damage as the standard "20 mil" liners.
About 80-90 percent of liner failures happen above the water line because of ultraviolet & heat damage. When the sun reflects upon the water and hits the lined walls, UV rays are reflected and "fry" the liner that is not being cooled by the pool water. This could possibly cause liner failure over a prolonged amount of time. Like anything else left under the sun, the sun can fade the colors in your liner.
